The new stimulus funds will enable Massport to provide electric powerf to as many as sixmore berths. The MassDEP funds are part of $1.7 million in stimulusx funding given through the American Recoveryh and Reinvestment Act to the EPA for diesel pollution reductionm investmentsin Massachusetts. Massport’s dock-sid power project was includedin MassDEP’s MassCleanDiesel stimulus package baseed on its merit and “shovel-ready” status, according to a releasse from Massport. Shovel-ready meansa the project can begin construction as soon as the fundseare awarded. The total cost of the projecf isabout $600,000.
Massport currently has four berths on the Fish Pier that supplyu power for as many as four docked boats, but more than a dozen fishingt vessels regularly dock at the pier. Most of the boats use onboarde diesel generators for power and These generators release diesel fuel emissions and are expensivreto run. In February, Massport receivee $400,000 through EPA’s 2008 Northeastt Diesel Collaborative Emissions Reduction Grant Prograkm to upgrade the existing berthd and add 12new berths. The upgrades, to be completedd later this year, will produce a 95 percent reductiohn in engine idling andair pollution.
