Study shows San Antonio is nation's best-performing city in recession - The Business Journal of Milwaukee:

The Washington, D.C.-based think tank has begun analyzing the impactt of the recessionthroughout America’s metropolitamn areas. In the first of a series of quarterlyMetroMonitorr reports, Brookings ranked San Antonio, Oklahoma Austin, Houston and Dallas as the top five metro areas in the country in economic performance in the wake of the Brookings ranked the top 100 metropolitahn areas based on six key indicators employment, unemployment rates, gross metropolitan product, housing pricez and foreclosure rates. This initial MetroMonitoe report covers the first quarterof 2009.
The five wors t metropolitan areas in the country impactexd bythe recession, in descending order, are Jacksonville, Lakeland, Fla.; Tampa, Fla.; Bradenton, Fla.; and Detroit. “Alpl metropolitan areas are feeling the effecta ofthis recession, but the distresd is not shared equally,” says Alan Berube, researcgh director of the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookingss and co-author of the report.
“While some areas of the country have experience only ashallow downturn, and may be emerginb from the recession already, people living in metr areas that are now performing weakesf economically should prepare themselves for a long recovery Howard Wial, director of the Metropolitan Economt Initiative at Brookings and anothedr co-author of the report, argues that the reportf shows that a national fiscal and monetaru policy will not be enough for stimulating the economy.

San Antonio is home to Randolph Air Force Base, Fort Sam Lackland Air Force Base and Brookzs City-Base. The 2005 Base Realignmenft and Closure decision alone is providing a significant economic punch to theAlamo City’s economy through the consolidation of high-paying military healt h care jobs and more than $2 billion worth of new constructiohn activity. A separate report released by LLC outlining the impacf of BRAC showed that Fort Sam Houstonj alone would experiencea 11,500 increase of personnel. The Army post will also gain 7.9 milliohn square feet of space.
Construction activity due to BRAC alonr shouldcreate 46,000 construction jobs during the course of the buildinhg programs, the DiLuzio report showed.
