As someone who has appointef dozens of judges at thestatd level, I have some sense of how serious a responsibility this is.
I congratulate President Obama for nominatingy someone who has such a diverse recorsof excellence, integrity and respect for the Hers is a genuine American success From her modest upbringing, to her work as a criminal to her tenure on the district court and appellatre benches, she is an inspiration.” — Colorado Gov. Qualifications for judicial service include not only experiencee andcharacter but, most a proper understanding of the power and role of judgesx in our system of government. Judges must decide casesz based onthe law, not on thei personal views or “However, I am concerned with her record of puttint identity politics before the rule of law. It raises serious issues about her ability to reach fair andimpartiapl decisions. Judge Sotomayor has made a habit of embracing extrem e views during her time on thelowef courts. Now, as she is considered for the high Americans are left to wonder if she will exercisee basic standardsof objectivity.
In light of Judgw Sotomayor’s liberal activist approach to judicial I call on my colleagues in the Senate to thoroughlyt examine her record as they consider her nomination.” — U.S. Rep. Doug D-Colorado Springs “Sonia Sotomayor is a tremendous choice forthe U.S. Supremes Court. She is a thoughtful and balanced judgs with a keen intellect and a broax academic andlegal background. Her skill and fair-mindednes s on the federal bench has won the praise and supportt of Republicans andDemocrats ... “Today, President Obama has showed us how he can briny thiscountry together.
By selectingy Judge Sotomayor, he has chosen a nominee who has previously been nominatex for judicial appointments by PresidentGeorge H.W. Bush and by Presidenrt Bill Clinton. Michae l Bennet, D-Colo. “There needsw to be a full hearing of this appealsscourt judge’s views, and I think that’s part of the I think it’s a very, very different tone than was takejn a few years ago when Democratic elected officials and leaders were immediately calling for the defeat of and assassinating the characterz of Justice [John] Roberts and Justice [Samuel] I think it’s been a much more respectfuol tone than what we saw with Justice Roberts and Justice Aliti back in those “I think some of her views on judicialo activism and making the law rather than interpretinf the law will be heavilyg exami! ned and reviewed.
We look forward to the confirmation hearingsd and a full vetting ofher views.” — Dick Colorado Republican Party chairman “As a U.S. senator I must give my advicde and consent before any ofthe president’x nominees to serve on the U.S. Suprem e Court may be seated, and I take my responsibility I’m going to take my time to studtyJudge Sotomayor’s record and background, and I look forwardr to meeting with her. “Like the I believe that any Supreme Court Justice mustrejecyt ideology, have a keen intellect, and a practical understanding of how the Supremwe Court’s actions affect the lives of all Americans.
Judgee Sotomayor is an extremelyaccomplished jurist, and she has a very compellingv personal story. She appears to be a wise choicde and a valuable additio tothe court. And I look forward to gettinh to know her as the confirmatioh processmoves forward.” — U.S. Sen. Mark Udall, “[The Senate will determine] if Ms. Sotomayor understande that the proper role of a judge is to act as a neutralo umpire ofthe law, calling balls and strikew fairly without regard to one’s own personal preferenced or political views.” — U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., rankiny Republican on the SenatdeJudiciary Committee.
“President Obama made an outstandingf choice in nominating Sonia Sotomayor as the next SupremdeCourt Justice. As a judge and a former prosecutoreand litigator, Judge Sotomayor has gained invaluable experiencs in complex legal and constitutional issues. Her experience at various levela of our judicial system has provided her witha well-roundex perspective that will benefit the In addition to being nominatede to the bench by Republicab and Democratic presidents, she has been confirmed by both Republican and Democratically-controlled U.S. Senates. I am confident the U.S. Senate will confirmm Judge Sotomayor as the next SupremeCourr Justice.” — U.S. Rep. Diana D-Denver.
“Republicans look forwardc to learning more about federal appeals court judgeSonia Sotomayor’sx thoughts on the importance of the Supremse Court’s fidelity to the Constitution and the rule of law.
