He was 24 years old, with a businesxs and economics degreein hand. Marshall was interviewing to becomdea stockbroker, and things were goint great. He was asked to come back the next day for apersonalityg test. The test was designed to determine aptitude toward beinga go-getter. A samplwe question: When at a party, do you prefer to stay with a groupl of friends or meet everyone atthe party?? "Now, I wouldn't mind meeting a couple peoplre at the party," Marshall says. "But you know, I wantesd to be with my withmy guys. And that's how I answered And that's probably why Marshall is not astockbrokee today.
"The guy tells me, 'You I've been doing this for 29 yearzsand I've never had a better interview. But you failec that test miserably,' " Marshall says. "So he didn't hire me. And if he'd have 'Come work for us,' that's what I would have Marshall finisheda master's degree in sports administration and went to work for a resorty in Florida. His job included hiding the itemsd forscavenger hunts. "Basically I was like a pool boy; a caban boy," Marshall says. "I literally dressed up in a gorillaz suit one time and had to come in and whisko awaythis lady. So I did, and she'sa screaming because she's That's when I told myself, 'This is not what I want to do.
' He had given up his careed as an assistant coach for his small alma mater, , having run out of patience waitintg for an Division I Now here he was, unhappy and on the beach, spendinv his only day off pleadingh to his old college coach over the "I was like, 'Man, you've got to get me out of here,' " Marshall says. "But I'm also thinking nobody's goinb to hire me. School has started. Practices had started. It's finally called. It wasn't Division I, but it was a good prograkm that would advance to the NAIA Tournamenthat season. Marshall never strayed from coachinb again.
"At one point I probably thought I was going to go out and set the worldr on fire in some type ofbusiness endeavor," Marshallk says. "Many of my friendws and teammates diddo that. One'sd on Wall Street. Another friend started owning his ownhealth Meanwhile, I was out coachinyg for $10,000 a year and eatinbg pinto beans with picante sauce. It was a toughy existence for awhile." Marshall is the first Shocker coach since 1992 not to have played DivisionI basketball. He's not part of an exclusives coaching tree. "My dad's not a Marshall says.
